My Small Business - Bright Corner

Hello, I am Chloe, owner and founder of Bright Corner. Since starting my business earlier this year I have met so many inspiring, creative small businesses and have loved hearing their stories, so I thought I would share mine.

I used to have a ‘normal’ career in a London office working in VFX production, which I did for about 10 years and loved it. London life after Uni was so exciting, I had a great group of friends and had landed my dream job. Most weeks I felt completely out of my depth but I got through it and loved the fast paced, stress of the industry. I soon learnt that no one knows what they are doing and that’s fine :)

Once I hit my 30’s the reality set in, I had climbed the ladder and had a lot more responsibility, which meant work was my life. I had a few really stressful projects, which made me unwell and started to think, “what am I doing, is this worth it”. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to leave as I didn’t know what I wanted to do but thought that I would never figure it out in this job. So I did the scary thing and left without a job or clue about what I was going to do.

We had just bought a house out of London in a village called Kings Langley, so I had moved and left my job within a month. It was such a life change, which was terrifying but also exciting as I could explore my real passions and figure out what made me happy. I spent that summer renovating our new house and reading a lot of self help books. I also started to look for volunteering opportunities as I still didn’t know what I wanted to do, so thought the best way to figure it out was to try things. I ended up volunteering at a local art gallery, which evolved into me managing their website and eventually led to some paid work with partnering companies and artists.

During this time we had started to try for a family and after about 6 months I became pregnant. I have an autoimmune disease called Lupus, so looking after myself was very important. I really slowed the pace and just worked here and there. I had my little girl in March 2017 and the next year was an amazing whirlwind of ups and downs. Once I had settled into becoming a mum I started to think about my dream job and came up with a few interesting ideas (which I may still do one day) but they weren’t quite right. Then one night I was chatting to my husband about how I couldn’t find a well designed wooden night light for our little girl’s room and he suggested I made one. This seemed daunting as I had no idea how to make a light but it gave me that spark of excitement, so I started to look into it and it evolved from there.

Over the next however many months (its a bit of a blur now) I designed 3 wooden night lights, got plywood prototypes made, built a website and eventually launched Bright Corner in September 2018. It has only been a few months but I have had so many positive responses to my plywood night lights. You definitely need that for motivation when running your own business. It is still early days but I am very excited about the run up to Christmas as I have pop-up shops and fairs to do and I am thinking about a few new wooden products for 2019.

So that’s my story so far. I am going to use this blog page to write about my experiences setting up Bright Corner - a small indie business with random additions of my other passions - interiors, design, art, nature, well-being. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks

Chloe x
