Bright Corner Wooden Ornaments - The Journey from idea to product

I am very excited as I have just launched my new Bright Corner ornament range, so I wanted to share with you the journey I went on to get here.

IDEA
I always knew I wanted to create a smaller product for my brand to compliment my lights, so the thought has always been there but I never knew what it was going to be. I have always found it hard to find pretty looking things for shelves and walls (apart from art and plants), so I knew I wanted it to be decorative rather than functional. I tired a few things including a wooden hanging / mobile but it wasn’t quite right (I still like this idea and may come back to it but it needs more development time). I then explored the idea of using my light designs, which would link the products and I came up with the idea of ornaments.

DESIGN
This idea made the design process easy as I would use the shapes of the lights. I decided to concentrate on the houses and trees to begin with and with the help of my husband used CAD to design them in 3D.

PROTOTYPES
Once I had designs that I liked, I printed them on a 3D printer using PLA, which is recyclable. These prototypes were to check how they looked as a set but also their scale and ability to stand. I changed the tree designs a few times to make the set of three work together and I also scaled the Townhouse but other than a few changes, I was very happy. I now wanted to see them in wood as this can change the whole feel of a product.

MANUFACTURE
I knew cutting these ornaments on a CNC machine would be delicate work, as the wood could split, so I needed a CNC company to work with me and luckily found a small local bussiness. I got one of each design cut first to check they worked in Birch Ply and I LOVED them. I then placed a small order of Townhouses and Trees to launch with. I also have a cottage in the pipeline but there are some scale issues we are ironing out.

PACKAGING
Along side the product design I had to think about my packaging. I wanted to keep it simple and eco friendly, so I decided to use draw-string canvas bags with my logo stamped on. These would then go in a flat box, so I could easily post them straight into a post box, which meant they would also go through customers letter boxes, making delivery easier and cheaper for everyone.

FUTURE DESIGNS
I am so excited about my new ornaments and already have so many ideas for other designs, including a tent and maybe a lighthouse (if I can get that to work). Let me know if you have ideas, as I am always up for exploring new designs and love feedback.

Many Thanks
